The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Centre on petition seeking social security benefits for “gig workers” employed by online food delivery, courier and taxi aggregators such as Ola, Uber, Zomato and Swiggy.
A Bench led by Justice L Nageswara Rao asked the government to respond to the PIL after senior advocate Indira Jaising, representing petitioner Indian Federation of app-based Transport Workers, submitted that “gig workers” fell under the unorganised sector and was outside the purview of social security benefits.
The petitioners contended the app-owning companies exercised complete supervision and control over the manner and method of the work with those who are allowed to register on the said apps.
