I like action-comedies, says actor Guneet Sharma

Jalandhar lad Guneet Sharma wanted to go to Canada, but fate had other plans for him. When he landed in Mumbai to record a single, little did he know that he would land up with a role in a show! A random audition and there he was, a part of Kumkum Bhagya — out of nowhere.

What is the biggest strength of Punjabi community?

Their innocence, unity and their stubbornness!

Punjab is rich in folk tradition; is there a story/song that you love the most?

The stories of Bhagat Singh, Hari Singh Nalwa and Maharaja Ranjit Singh are very close to my heart.

How was growing up in Jalandhar? Any memories that you can share from your growing up days?

I feel pride in telling people that I’m from Jalandhar, Punjab. A place from where we have had legends like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab, Hafeez Jalandhari, Master Saleem, Hans Raj Hans and more. My best times in Jalandhar were spent at my grandparents’ place during summer vacations.

What kept you positive during the lockdown?

My father was a cancer patient; he was in the last stage when the lockdown happened last year. During that time, I used to video call him. It was remarkable that not once did he speak about his pain or the hardships, he always smiled. He passed away during such a tough time.

What have been the biggest highs and lows in life; what did they teach you?

I had never struggled in life but then when I came to Mumbai, I found out what ups and downs are. I realised after coming here that only money matters. Everything else is secondary.

What are you working on these days?

I am working on a serial called Hero.

What kind of shows/movies do you like? Whom do you wish to work with?

I like action-comedies. I want to do movies like Garam Masala. Another far-fetched dream that I have is to play the role of Salman Khan in his biopic!

What are the three things that you learnt from this lockdown?

The biggest thing that I learnt in this lockdown is patience . Then, the next I think is love. The importance of family and all your loved ones. I also discovered that I am a brilliant cook.

OTT platforms saw a major spike during this lockdown. Do you think it is the future of entertainment?

I think this is a very positive sign for the entertainment industry. More work is being generated; there are more opportunities for youngsters.

When you are stressed, which place do you visit in Punjab?

Dera Baba Murad Shah.

Which Punjabi film is close to your heart and why?

Asa Nu Maan Watna Da by Harbhajan Maan, as that movie makes me realise that I too have to do a lot for Punjab.

Three prominent places you would recommend your friends to visit in Punjab?

Dera Baba Murad Shah, Jallianwala Bagh and Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Name the best place to eat authentic Punjabi food outside Punjab…

Sardaarji in Lokhandwala, Juhu and Bandra.

One thing about Punjab and Punjabis that you like the most?

I believe bravery is something that we Punjabis have got in heritage.
