Muktsar, February 17

Taking lessons from the Sangrur tragedy, the district administration on Monday initiated a drive to check violation of traffic norms by school vehicles. It issued 75 challans and impounded five vehicles.

In the Gidderbaha subdivision, 23 vehicles were challaned and three vehicles were impounded. In the Malout subdivision, 11 vehicles were challaned and two vehicles were impounded. Similarly, 41vehicles were challaned in the Muktsar subdivision.

Deputy Commissioner MK Aravind Kumar said the drive would continue in the coming days. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sandeep Kumar held a meeting with the representatives of some schools and told them to submit affidavits that their school vehicles were fulfilling all security norms. He also asked the school heads to furnish all information related to school vehicles, both owned by schools or hired.

Some local residents said the administration came into action only after a tragic incident took place. “At other times, the authorities concerned remain inactive and do not issue challan. The present drive will also not last long. Now the officials are challaning a large number of vehicles for violating security norms. Where were they earlier?”

“Action must also be taken against officials for negligence of duty,” they said.
