Police Commissioner calls for an explanation from cops, warns of punitive action against laxity

Police Commissioner Vikram Jeet Duggal on Saturday pulled up cops during a teleconference with the officials and SHOs over the laxities at nakas found by him late on Friday evening.

High Alert

  • In view of the high alert sounded by the government following busting of terror module by the Amritsar rural police involved in the bid to blast an oil tanker in Ajnala, the city police had identified as many as 84 naka points, where around 750 cops equipped with modern weapons, search and dragon lights for checking vehicles entering the city and questioning suspicious elements
  • Besides smart nakas were also installed at Novelty Chowk, Golden Gate, Putlighar Chowk, in Ranjit Avenue, near Vishal Mega Mart, Faizpura Chowk and Anngarh Chowk
  • At these nakas, the police used Punjab Artificial Intelligence System (PAIS) app to identify miscreants and verify the ownership of vehicles

He had called an explanation from cops after finding negligence at 20 per cent checkpoints installed in the city in view of high alert sounded by the Punjab Government.

He warned of punitive action against any laxity as it is a matter of national security.

“If any negligence is found, chowki in-charge will be suspended and explanation would be called from gazetted officers,” he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Parminder Singh Bhandal also accompanied him during the surprise checking.

Interestingly, during surprise checking, several people were found drinking liquor in the open. “We have seized weapons for further investigations to probe into the antecedents of the arms licence of holders,” said DCP Bhandal.
