GNDU special exam chance for Rs 25K invites students’ ire

AMRITSAR: Students of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) are perturbed at its administration for announcing an “exorbitant” fee of Rs 25,000 per paper for grabbing a special chance.

Students of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) are perturbed at its administration for announcing an “exorbitant” fee of Rs 25,000 per paper for grabbing a special chance. Under the special chance, an opportunity each will be given to those students who have exhausted all their chances to clear the compartments.

As per the decision of the syndicate of the GNDU, the special chance will be given to students, who appeared in university examinations since 2011.

A student, preferring not to be named, said, “The last date for the online application to avail special chance is April 23. The fee is quite high, deterring candidates from economically-weak families.”

Suresh Sharma, president, AAP (Urban), said, “Panjab University, Chandigarh, charges Rs 5,000 for the same. The GNDU has been established to provide quality education to people at a nominal fee but it appears to be following the corporate culture.”

“It is the influence of government policies, which has been extending freebies to corporate houses and showing empty coffers to people,” he added.

Prof Dr Manoj Kumar, in-charge (examinations), said, “This special chance should not be seen as a mere compartment paper. The fee for supplementary exam is about Rs 1,000 per paper. The special chance is for those students who have exhausted all reappear attempts. Earlier, the fee for special chance was about 20,000, which has been raised to Rs 25,000 this financial year.”
