The Ajnala police booked three persons for allegedly assaulting a cop in Lakhuwal village yesterday. The accused have been identified as Kanwarpal Singh, Jagroop Singh and Vikram Singh, all residents of Lakhuwal village.

Sub-Inspector Dhanwinder Singh said he had gone to the village in connection with a complaint lodged by a relative of Kanwarpal Singh. While he was talking to the complainants, the accused turned up and had heated arguments. According to Dhanwinder, when he asked him to leave, the latter “manhandled” a girl, Harmanpreet Kaur, outside the residence of the complainants over some issue.

When the cop stopped him from doing so, he was attacked. “He quarreled with me when I stopped him from manhandling the girl and using abusive language. He held me by collar and tore my uniform. He also damaged my name plate. Meanwhile, Jagroop Singh and Vikram Singh came and took Kanwarpal Singh away while threatening me,” he alleged.

The police have registered a case under Sections 353 (assaulting or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharging public duty), 506 and 34 of the IPC in this regard.

The police said the accused were yet to be arrested. Raids are on to nab them.
