Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Bhupinder Singh assumed office here on Saturday. He said his priorities would be peaceful conduct of the Lok Sabha elections, nailing the drug peddlers and streamlining the traffic in the holy city.

In an interaction with mediapersons, he said he was fortunate to serve in the holy city. He said that the city witnessed a huge footfall of national and international tourists. “Traffic is a major problem. It will be among my priorities to streamline the traffic. The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is there, but still there is a scope for improvement,” he said.

He said the Parliamentary elections were round the corner and conducting free and fair polls would be the prime duty of the police force. He said nobody would be allowed to take law and order in their hands.

Answering media queries about the rampant drug abuse, he said the police had adopted an intolerant attitude towards illegal drug traffickers, smashing the network at the local level. He appealed to the residents to inform him about those involved in drug peddling so that appropriate action may be taken.

Bhupinder Singh joined the police force in 1993 as Inspector. He remained posted as commandant at Police Recruits Training Centre (PRTC), Jahan Khela, Hoshiarpur, which is among the top centres in the country.
