The Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) has entered into an agreement with a Delhi-based firm to generate 700-MW solar energy in a bid to become self-sufficient for its energy needs.

As per the agreement, the council will not invest a single penny either to install or generate renewable power as the company will bear the entire cost.

Council finance secretary Gunbir Singh said the firm would recover its investment by charging Rs 4 per unit of energy to be supplied to about 20 educational institutes being run by the KCGC.

He added that the agreement could be extended for the next 10 years. He said the council was currently paying about Rs 7 per unit to the PSPCL.

Council’s honorary secretary Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina said the decision to switch over from the conventional source of power to renewable energy was made in consonance with the Union New and Renewable Energy Ministry’s mission to achieve renewable energy expansion programme of 175 GW till 2022.

He said the project would be commissioned in the next six months and the power produced would be given on priority to hostels and canteens. He said they hoped to fulfil 80 per cent of their energy needs from solar power.
