Tarn Taran, February 11

Employees of the local Municipal Council (MC) began their indefinite strike on Monday. They are up in arms over non-payment of salary for the last two months.

The agitating employees shut the doors of the council’s office and staged a sit-in (dharna) in front of it. The women employees too participated in the agitation.

Maninder Singh Patanga, Varinder Kumar, Jatinder Kumar and other leaders of the employees said the employees were sans salaries for the last two months due to which their families had to face hardships.

The protesters said that their agitation would go on until the council makes the payment. Surinder Singh Mallhi, vice-president, Municipal Council, said the state government had released a grant worth Rs 5 crore. The said the payment would be made soon.

The protest left the visitors inconvenienced.
