Offices of the Municipal Corporation, Amritsar, have become a safe haven for fraudsters offering jobs in the civic body. Two separate cases of job scams have been reported in the past few months. Swindlers made lakhs of rupees from 100 unemployed aspirants on the pretext of providing them with jobs in various departments of MC in both cases. The police has been investigating both the cases but no one has questioned officials of the civic body as to how outsiders and insiders have been operating illegal job firms from the MC offices.

As many as 60 victims of a recent job scam led by Ekta Service Provider Union filed a complaint with the police that a regular safai sewak of the MC took lakhs of rupees by promising to providing them with jobs. However, he failed to arrange the jobs and did not return the money either.

Earlier a fake-job scam had surfaced on May 21 when some victims who were ‘recruited’ to the post of gardeners in the Horticulture Department of the MC in 2016 — and they used to work in various gardens of the MC — approached higher officials of the MC. When they discussed the issue with them, the then Joint Commissioner of the MC told them that the MC had not recruited anyone on such a post.

On the victims’ complaint, the city police has arrested Sukhwinder Singh Raju, the key accused of the fake- job scam case along with one of his relatives, who was an employee of the MC, Kuldip Singh, a Class IV employee who reportedly helped the accused to issue fake ID-cards of the MC.

Raju duped 46 persons on the pretext of providing them with jobs in the horticulture wing of the MC. The victims of the job scam (40 men and six women) had been working for the past two years without salary.

Raju charged them money varying from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh each, and issued them fake identity cards.

Harpreet Singh, a victim of the fraud, said, “The police should investigate the nexus between MC employees and fraudsters. How have been they been operating the so-called job firms from the offices of the Municipal Corporation?”
