The rural police have started examining the phone calls of Mandeep Singh of Pandori Waraich village and Triptpal Singh of Jijeyani village who were shot at by gangsters on Tuesday evening. While Mandeep died on the spot, Triptpal was seriously injured in the firing.

Members of a Batala-based gang had claimed the responsibility of the two incidents, saying that they had an enmity with them.

The police were trying to identify the assailants who had fired at the two victims. “Though members of the notorious Pavitar Singh gang had claimed the responsibility of killing and injuring the two youths, we are trying to find out who were the shooters who had executed the crime,” said Amritsar rural SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal.

A preliminary probe found that though Mandeep was a drug addict, he did not have any enmity as being claimed by the gang members on social media. He said Triptpal Singh was still not in a condition to record his statement.

He said the phone call details would likely to establish their links if any with the suspects which would be further investigated to ascertain the facts.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a hunt to nab the suspects who were on the run since the incident.

According to the police, an alleged gangster Harwinder Singh of Batala had posted a message on social media, claiming that they had killed Mandeep for ‘honour’. The post has pictures of two youths holding weapons. They claimed themselves to be members of the Pavitar group of Batala and that they had an old enmity with the victim.

Within an hour of the incident, they had also shot at Triptpal when he was taking a stroll along with his pet dog. Three youths came on a black-coloured bike and fired at him. He suffered bullet injuries in his leg and arms.
