Printers told to follow ECI rules

The District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner has instructed owners of the printing and publishing houses to ensure adherence to the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections for printing and publishing election-related publicity material.

Deputy Commissioner Shivdular Singh said that under the Representation of People Act, no election material could be published without the names and addresses of the printers and publishers.

He said a declaration was required to be submitted in this regard with signatures of printers and publishers and other witnesses. He also asked the printers and publishers not to publish any material that could hurt the feelings of any community or religious group. 

A media certification and monitoring committee is also keeping an eye on the advertisements being run in print and electronic media, he added. The DC said political parties and candidates were required to take prior permission from the committee for running any advertisements and action can be taken against them for flouting rules. 

3 poll observers appointed

To keep a check on the expenditure incurred by candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission has appointed three observers for the Amritsar constituency. The observers will ensure that any expenditure made by the candidates and political parties is brought on record. The Election Commission has fixed a limit of Rs 70 lakh for a candidate to spend in the election.

Election observers Akhilesh Gupta, Sudakar Pande and Sidharapa Kapantvar on Wednesday asked the candidates to maintain detailed day-to-day record of their expenditure in the ‘Election Expenditure Register’ being provided to them by the returning officers. The observers asked them to ensure the checking of all vehicles to stop the misuse of cash, alcohol and other drugs in the poll.
