A woman, identified as Harpinder Kaur, committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in New Azad Nagar, Sultandwind road, here yesterday.

Amandeep Singh of Vallah, brother of the deceased, has accused her mother-in-law Jasbir Kaur of forcing her to take the extreme step. He stated to the police that Harpinder was married to Gurpreet Singh around 11 years ago and the couple had two children. “Jasbir Kaur used to harass her and she was perturbed over it. She had told us about it and our family had narrated her ordeal to her husband Gurpreet Singh. Yesterday too, a quarrel took place between Jasbir and Harpinder Kaur,” he said.

According to him, Harpinder was disturbed over continuous harassment being meted out to her so she ended her life.

The police said Harpinder’s eight-year-old son was in the room when she hanged herself. He raised the alarm following which people rushed to her room and took her to Sri Guru Ramdass Hospital where doctors declared her dead. The boy narrated the incident to the police.

Amrik Singh, investigating officer, said a case under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered in this connection. He said the woman has been arrested.

Harassment?

Victim’s brother says she was being harassed by her mother-in-law for long. Harpinder hanged herself in front of her eight-year-old son who raised the alarm, following which she was taken to hospital.
