Admn opens library for underprivileged kids

Bathinda, June 23

To facilitate underprivileged students studying in government schools, the district administration opened a library at Red Cross Bhawan here on Saturday.

The well-equipped library houses around 2,000 books worth Rs 2 lakh, a couple of tables, chairs and bean bags.

Deputy Commissioner Diprava Lakra, who is also the chairman of Red Cross Society, Bathinda, and ADC Sakshi Sawhney inaugurated the library.

Speaking on the occasion, Lakra said more than 300 such libraries would be set up in various villages and towns across the district.

On the occasion, students of Prayaas School and Appu Society got a chance to read colourful books in Punjabi, Hindi and English. Some of the books have been bought online.

The authorities bought a few books from other states while the remaining has been bought from the local market.

Students of government schools will have free access to the library, though they would not be allowed to take the books home. Students of private school will have access to it after nominal fees is fixed for the same.

The library will remain open from 9 am to 6 pm on all working days. Books for small kids in Punjabi, Hindi and English, teaching alphabets, counting and picture recognition are available at the library.

Besides, there are story collections for kids aged 3 to 15 years. It also has five to six copies of encyclopedia. Books of famous authors such as Ruskin Bond, Agatha Christie and detective works of Sherlock Holmes are also available.

Red Cross Society secretary Naveen Garhwal, patron Vikramjit Singh and others were also present on the occasion.
