Bathinda, June 2

After several hiccups, two lifts installed at the city railway station in March this year, were made fully operational this week.

Even as the work of installing the elevators was completed in February this year, the railway authorities, citing technical glitches or other reasons, kept postponing dates of making them fully operational for the past three months.

Notably, after the work was completed to install elevators, the railway authorities had put up a written note at the site mentioning that the lifts would me made operational after acquiring the ‘safety certificate’ before March 31.

In March, when Northern Railway General Manager TP Singh, along with other officials, around 20 days ago, the local railway authorities had operated the lifts for the team, but after that these were never made operational.

Later again in the first week of April, the lifts were made operational for sometime before being stopped again after April 10.

After being operated on and off basis for three months, the lifts were made fully operational last week, providing much-needed respite to passengers, especially elderly and handicapped persons, who would be greatly benefited.

Ramandeep Goyal, who travels daily by train, said, “As my father is a cancer patient, we have to visit a private hospital in Ludhiana for treatment every fortnight. As he is paralysed in both legs, he would really benefit from the lifts at the railway station.”
