The district Health Department started a fortnight-long awareness drive to sensitise city residents to diarrhoea-related diseases at the Women and Children Hospital (WCH) here on Monday.

Addressing a gathering of visitors at the hospital, the Civil Surgeon, Dr Hari Narain Singh, said: “Breastfeeding is essential to reduce the risk of diarrhoea-related diseases. And if a child is affected with the disease, ORS solution must be given. It will keep the child hydrated and strengthen its digestion system.”

Dr Singh emphasised the importance of maintaining hygiene standards to avoid diarrhoea-related diseases. He said ASHA workers had been roped in by the department to reach out to households to make them aware of the disease and prevention methods. He added that right awareness plays a significant role in keeping the disease at bay.

Other officials of the department were also present at the occasion. The department will continue organising such awareness drives in coming two weeks at the WCH.
