Bathinda, April 23

Temperature has started rising in the city with the mercury crossing the 40 degrees Celsius mark on Tuesday for the first time in this season.

The maximum temperature on Tuesday was 41.6 degrees Celsius, as per the agri-net department of Punjab Agriculture University (PAU), regional station, Bathinda. The minimum was registered at 20.5 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature on Monday was 39.6 degrees while the minimum was 19 degrees Celsius.

The soaring mercury may leave city residents high and dry. It is bound to bring cheer to the faces of wheat farmers who had been facing the problems due to the presence of moisture in the crop due to delay in the onset of summer and prolonged winter.

Besides, the rising temperature would also bring cheer to the faces of the shopkeepers selling air-conditioners and coolers.

As the heat swept the region, almost all the important roads in the city wore a deserted look throughout the day as residents preferred to remain indoors.

Those who were forced to move out because of work commitments covered their faces as a protection against the scorching sun.
