Bathinda, August 18

Members of the Punjab Students Union (PSU) on Saturday burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister to register their protest against the attack on student activist Umar Khalid. They demanded a probe into the matter and the arrest of the accused at the earliest.

A large number of PSU members gathered in front of Government Rajindra College and raised slogans against the Union Government.

Sangeeta Rani, president of the PSU, said, “On the one hand the government talks about freedom of speech and expression, but on the other, people fighting for their right to speak are attacked. The JNU student leader is attacked by an armed man. People behind it also took the responsibility for the act, but the police have failed to arrest them.”

“The conspirators had said they would surrender at the house of Sikh revolutionary Kartar Singh Sarabha on August 17, which is also a conspiracy to stoke communal tension. Despite their claims, the police are yet to arrest accused even when they had given the exact location for it,” she added.

The protesting members demanded that the matter must be thoroughly investigated and the accused must be arrested at the earliest.
