Bathinda, December 9

The Court of the Additional Sessions Judge, Paramjit Kaur, on Tuesday awarded 5-year imprisonment to an Assistant Sub-Inspector, Home Guard jawan and an opium smuggler for carrying 1.1 kg of opium.
The accused in the case  were ASI Manjit Singh, Home Guard Jawan Taar Singh and smuggler Kuldeep Singh.
The Assistant Sub-Inspector and a headconstable had arrested Kuldeep Singh with 1.1 kg of opium and were on their way to Bathinda from Barnala. Both the policemen were deployed with the counter intelligence wing of the police.
The policemen, however, were arrested by another police party on the charges  of conspiring with the smuggler for selling the seized 1.1 kg of opium in connivance with the accused.
Though the policemen made the plea that they had arrested Kuldeep Singh with opium, the second police party that arrested the trio — ASI, home guard jawan and smuggler — stated that the three were going to sell the opium.
The police party, which arrested the ASI and two others produced evidence in the court supporting their claims.
