The Patiala police on Friday registered a case against 12 students of Punjabi University two days after a violent clash between two student unions on the campus.

The complainant Ravinderpreet Singh, a student at the university, told the police that he and two other students — Baljinderveer Singh and Jaismeen Kumar – were attacked due to party related issues. On Tuesday night, a scuffle between Democratic Students’ Organisation (DSO) and Students’ Association of Punjab (SAP) took place following a protest by DSO. The incident left six students and a university official injured.

A case has been registered against Amitoj, Vikram Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Kiran, Amandeep Singh, Jagtar Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Balkar Singh, Jagdeep Singh, Gursewak Singh and Amandeep Singh under sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 427 (mischief), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the IPC. 

Counter cases registered

Students associated with both DSO and SAP have registered counter cases against each other. No arrests have been made so far. Meanwhile, DSO students said they would continue strike outside the Vice Chancellor’s office.
