Chandigarh, April 2

In a major reprieve  for traders  and transporters, the  Centre has exempted  Chandigarh  from the e-way bill requirement for intra-state supply of  goods.

Sources in the UT Excise and Taxation Department said the notification for exemption to Chandigarh from the   requirement of the  e-way bill had been received. With the notification, the  traders  can work within the city  as usual and send goods from one  place to another without   generating the e-way  bill. This will not only ensure faster delivery of goods,  but  also save time.

Transporters started generating the e-way   bill from Monday to carry out their business. BL  Sharma, general secretary of the Chandigarh  Transporters  Association, said the  website  for generating the  e-way bill  worked  fine.

He said while the decision regarding exemption from the e-way bill  for  intra-state  business in the city  was a welcome  step, officers  should  cooperate  with the  transporters  till all of them understood  the system  fully.

To track movement of goods and check tax evasion, the government introduced the e-way bill from Monday. It is mandatory for traders and transporters to carry an electronic-way bill for inter-state movement of goods worth over Rs 50,000.
