Chandigarh, April 19

A local court today acquitted four persons of the charge of setting four vehicles on fire.

In a complaint to the police, Sompal, a resident of Tin Colony, Sector 52, stated that on the intervening night of February 20 and 21 last year, some persons set his auto-rickshaw parked near his house on fire. After sometime, Lalji, a resident of the colony, informed him that his motorcycle had also been set on fire. Then Dharambir and Jaswinder Singh, residents of the area, came there told him that their auto-rickshaws had also been set ablaze.

Rohit, Ravi, Angad and Ashwani were booked under Section 436 (Mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc) on the statement of Lalji and were arrested during investigation.

Defence counsel Dikshit Arora said the suspects were acquitted due to contradiction in the statements of the prosecution witness.
