Dogged, PU looks to civic body for help

Terror of stray dogs has haunted Panjab University (PU) to such an extent that its authorities have sought an immediate help from the local Municipal Corporation (MC)to tackle the menace.

Sources said officials of the university had written a letter to the MC to tackle the problem of stray dogs and monkeys. The canines and simians are posing a challenge even to the security staff.

In a letter written to the MC Commissioner, the university authorities said, “The number of stray dogs on the campus has increased recently. They roam around the campus area, posing threat to students and faculty. They chase vehicles entering the campus.”

Stray dogs can also be seen freely roaming around the office of the Vice Chancellor and near various departments on the varsity campus. Dogs can be spotted at the shopping complex too.

A shopkeeper there said many times, he saw them barking at people.

Meanwhile, officials of the Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), Sector 30, also raised the issue of stray dogs with the MC Commissioner.

In a letter to the MC Commissioner, a CSIO official said a large number of stray dogs roam the campus and the residential areas in its vicinity.

A resident of the area said possibility of some dogs being rabid cannot be ruled out.

Ajay Jagga, an advocate and a resident of Sector 21, said though the MC had framed a policy to control the population of canines, it failed to come up with a constructive solution to control the stray dog menace. This despite the fact that the High Court has taken a cognisance of the problem.

Security staff face challenges too
