Chandigarh, December 12

A day after refusing security to the Indian cricket team, the UT Police today agreed to provide security cover to both India and Sri Lanka teams during their stay in the city for the second ODI at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali.

The decision was made after a meeting between the Indian cricket board (BCCI) officials and the UT Police.

The Sri Lankan cricketers arrived in the city today.

Sources said the sports body nearly owes Rs 9 crore to the UT Police on account of providing security to the teams.

While Rs 82 lakh is pending for providing security during international matches, the remaining amount is due for providing security during IPL matches, said a source.

Official sources, however, said during the meeting, BCCI officials claimed that the previous bills cannot be cleared immediately.

A police official, meanwhile, said: “This time we are providing security on payment basis.”

A total of 125 police personnel have been deployed for the security of both teams. Sources said 82 personnel will be on duty at a time, out of which 31 will guard the players in case they move out of the hotel for a private visit. A DSP has been appointed as the camp officers.

Officials also said a civil suit filed by the Chandigarh Police against the organisers over the previous dues was pending in the district court.
