Ropar, January 4

A resident of Dhahe village, near here, died allegedly in a scuffle with his neighbour yesterday. The deceased has been identified as Onkar Singh, father of notorious gangster Dilpreet Singh.

Accused Harjit Singh is stated to be a relative of the deceased.

Surinder Kaur, wife of the deceased told the police that Onkar Singh was a veterinary inspector at nearby Bajrur village and when he returned from his duty on Wednesday afternoon he had heated arguments with his cousin Harjit Singh living in the neighbourhood over irrigation of fields. Following this Harjit pushed him away and he fell down, she alleged. Surinder Kaur said Onkar Singh was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead by doctors.

As soon as the police came to know about the incident in the evening, apprehending retaliation from Dilpreet they rounded up the accused and put up nakas at several places in the area. Dilpreet is wanted by the police in several murder and dacoity cases.

Ropar SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said a case under Section 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC was registered.
