Health Dept swings into action to tackle swine flu

After a swine flu case was reported from Bapu Dham colony recently, the UT Health Department has swung into action.

Nearly 20 health officers have been deployed in the area to sensitise residents to the flu symptoms.

Giving details, Dr Gaurav Aggarwal said the 18- year-old swine flu patient was out of danger and also discharged from the hospital.

“We have learnt that the boy had visited Amritsar on February 15 where he fell ill. After returning to the city, the boy was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he tested positive for swine flu,” said Dr Aggarwal.

He said besides carrying out prophylactic (preventive) treatment of the patient and persons who came in contact with the boy, the Health Department was conducting sensitisation programme.

“The awareness programme was launched as the symptoms of swine flu are relatively similar to common cold. However, at the same time we are advising people not to get panic,” said Dr Aggarwal.

A health department office requesting anonymity said: “We have to remain extra cautious as the possibility of spreading of disease always remains high in the densely-populated areas.”

Besides announcements, the Health Department officials are also visiting houses to generate awareness among residents about swine flu symptoms. People are being told to wash their hands and carry a piece of cloth or a handkerchief while visiting the market.
