Mohali, October 22

A controversy erupted when a photograph depicting a liquor contractor, who is also an accused in a murder case, apparently taking part in the piping ceremony in connection with the promotion of a police official, was released by the local authorities here today.

The photograph in question apparently showed that Amarjit Singh, alias Jeeti, who is also the brother of Punjab Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, and Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal were installing ranks (stars) on the shoulders of a Head Constable, who has been promoted as the Assistant Sub-Inspector, here.

The local authorities, who released the photograph, along with the related information for the news, however, immediately withdrew the press note when some mediapersons started inquiring about the participation of Jeeti in the piping ceremony. While withdrawing the press note, the authorities mentioned the reason of ‘suspected violation of protocol’ in the photograph.

SSP Chahal said relatives and acquaintances do come to witness such ceremonies of their kin. “It’s a routine thing”, he said. Notably, Jeeti was booked in the murder case of Rattan Singh eight years ago. The trial is on in the case. — TNS
