Panchkula, October 18

Swaraj India candidate from Panchkula Madhu Anand, in a conversation with The Tribune, said she decided to fight elections as an activist and could not do everything on a large scale.

“I am getting a lot of support from people, particularly women. We are trying our best to make voters understand their real issues. It’s clear that people are fed up with the ruling BJP. Only the Almighty knows what will happen on October 24 when election results are out,” she said.

“Election results won’t make a difference as I will continue my work as an activist irrespective of what happens,” Anand said.

She said she was focusing on employment, rehabilitation of colonies, roads, dumping ground and enhancement during her campaigning.

“There is just one hospital where high patient inflow doesn’t allow poor to get proper medical facility. The unemployed youths are turning to alcohol and drugs to mitigate their discomfort. Some of them are settling in foreign countries,” she said.

Speaking on BJP candidate Gian Chand Gupta’s tenure as an MLA, she said, “He did some development works, but there is a long list of agendas which could have been focused upon. He failed to fulfil the promise of a medical college, a university and shifting of dumping ground.”

“Some of my near and dear ones, associated with the BJP, have stopped visiting me as I am contesting from Panchkula,” she said.

“Why elections aren’t being fought on key issues. Voters should understand that parties are trying to befool them as these issues won’t bring prosperity in their life. When the BJP doesn’t have anything to say on development, they rake up issues like Article 370 and construction of Ram mandir,” the Swaraj India leader. On arrangement of finances, she said, “Our party doesn’t have enough money. It’s only a few people who are supporting us financially.”

“I have been working for Panchkula since long. I have worked extensively for the rights of women, workers and those in need,” she added.
