Patiala, July 12

The protest by contractual outsourced workers entered its ninth day at Punjabi University here on Thursday. The workers also took out a protest march on the campus.

Dr Jatinder Singh Mattu, president, SC/BC Employees’ Federation, Punjabi University, sat on a hunger strike on Thursday. The protesters said officials had given them assurance that their demand would be discussed in the upcoming Syndicate meeting, but they would continue their strike.

The workers added that they would meet the VC on Friday.

The contractual workers, including security guards, and cleanliness workers have been demanding regularisation of their services.

The cleanliness workers have decided not to lift the garbage or to do any work till their demand was met.

Officials contended that the contractual outsourced workers were not part of the university.

Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Khaira will reach the university on Friday to extend his support to the protest. — TNS
