Chandigarh, September 17

While the Chandigarh Police continue to guard the visiting cricket teams during their stay in the city, the Police Department is yet to receive pending dues of Rs 8.92 crore for providing security to the teams during the World Cup and IPL matches.

India and South Africa are scheduled to play a T20 match at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday, and both teams are putting up at a hotel in Chandigarh. Round-the-clock security has to be provided to the players during their stay at the hotel and at the time the teams head for practice.

The pending dues are for the security provided during the World Cup and IPL matches held at the PCA Stadium during 2010 to 2012. The UT police filed a civil suit at the District Courts, Sector 43, in 2015 in this regard and objections over the pending dues have also been pointed out in the audit reports of the department.

A UT police spokesperson, DSP Charanjit Singh, said since the matter was sub judice, he could not comment on it.

However, the DSP said round-the-clock security had been provided to the cricket teams since they arrived in the city on Monday.

“Police personnel, including three inspectors under the supervision of DSP (East), are present round the clock to ensure the safety of the cricketers. Besides, the SHO, IT Park, is also providing assistance outside the hotel where the teams are putting up,” said the DSP. — TNS
