Chandigarh, October 20

The Border Security Force (BSF) will organise a ‘run for martyrs’ at Sukhna Lake on October 22. This is the first such event being organised by the BSF and is expected to become an annual affair.

Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore will be the chief guest at the event. The 5-km run will commence from the Lake Sports Club and culminate at the starting point after proceeding towards the Rock Garden.

Inspector General (Operations) Abhinav Kumar said this year, four BSF personnel had been killed and 37 others injured in the line of duty along the western borders. The BSF killed five militants and eight smugglers, apprehended 174 infiltrators and seized 166 kg of heroin, 46 weapons and 932 rounds of ammunition.

Kumar said apart from maintaining border vigil, the BSF had also been regularly organising free medical camps and other civic action programmes in border regions apart from providing free pre-recruitment training to the youth. This year, units and establishments under the BSF’s Western Command, responsible for the entire western border, has been allocated Rs 2.8 crore for such programmes.
