Punjab, Haryana Governor-cum-UT Administrator Kaptan Singh Solanki on Tuesday vowed to make Chandigarh an ideal smart city where the people will get 24x7 water and electricity supply.

In his Republic Day speech, Solanki said several projects like metro rail, international airport and world-class railway station will change the face of city and life of its residents.

Solanki unfurled Tricolour at Sector 17 Parade Ground.

Governor praised and congratulated the people of Punjab and Haryana for their hard work.

He said Haryana deserved appreciation for providing good governance through e-governance and making efforts to eradicate corruption through zero tolerance policy while the people of Punjab contributed in the freedom struggle.

The border state has contributed a lot in defence and economic development of India, Solanki recalled.‎

Civic amenities to be improved: Mayor

Addressing the gathering at a Republic Day function in fire station building in Sector 17, Chandigarh Mayor Arun Sood said the civic amenities in the city will be improved.

There is a proposal to open three new fire stations. Additional water supply line will be set up to bring water from Kajauli to the city in 2017, the Mayor said. All functions will be dedicated to ‘Beti Padao Beti Bachao’ programme.

All public toilets will be made functional and 27 new toilet blocks to be constructed in 27 green belts, he said, adding that new dustbins will be installed in markets.

The Mayor said they will take suggestions online from public on budget for next financial year.

The Municipal Corporation will open a complaint centre and the MC commissioner to hold complaint redressal camps on fortnightly basis.

The Mayor said efforts will be made to ensure completion of projects within deadline.
