Talks over the 24-hour opening of girls’ hostels between the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) president Kanupriya and Dean, Students Welfare, (DSW) Prof Emanuel Nahar and DSW (women) Prof Neena Caplash failed again on Monday.

Vice-president Daler Singh called for referendum and agreed with the relaxations offered by the authorities on Monday. Other office-bearers, members of executive committee of PUCSC and wardens of hostels were present on the occasion.

Vrinda, a member of the executive committee, said parents’ concerns on safety of women students during night were valid. The formula offered by the university is within the rules mentioned in hostel prospectus.

Reactions

“Entry from libraries or labs is allowed at any time. Ten late entries are allowed. We will go by the referendum,” said Daler Singh, Vice-President, PUCSC.

“The talks were held after discussions with the Vice-Chancellor. A number of relaxations have been offered to girl students. They can go anywhere after making entries in the mobility register,” said Amarinder Singh, Secretary PUCSC.

“The same proposal, as given earlier, has been put forward with even more restrictions. It is shameful on the part of some council members like vice-president Daler Singh who sided with the authorities and betrayed hundreds of girls demanding equality for the last two weeks,” said Kanupriya, president, PUCSC.

“We won’t give up. We are united and will continue the protest,” she said. Joint secretary Vipul Atray could not be contacted.
