Two-day global conference on environmental laws from today

CHANDIGARH:Chief Justices and Judges from seven countries, Supreme Court Judges and representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme are expected to take part in a two-day global law conference on “Environmental Laws: Challenges and Opportunities” to be inaugurated by Union Minister for Railways, Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Saturday.



Chandigarh, November 15

Chief Justices and Judges from seven countries, Supreme Court Judges and representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme are expected to take part in a two-day global law conference on “Environmental Laws: Challenges and Opportunities” to be inaugurated by Union Minister for Railways, Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Saturday.

Representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, chairpersons of the Central and state pollution control boards, vice-chancellors of National Law Universities, advocates and Bar Council heads, among others, are also expected to participate in the conference organised by Chandigarh University. Besides, more than 10,000 students from all over the country are expected to attend the conference.

Spread over two days, the conference has been divided into seven sessions, including three technical sessions on forest and biodiversity, climate change, right to clean water: a myth or reality, air pollution and municipal solid waste.

Varsity Chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu said national dignitaries include Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Hemant Gupta of the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel and Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Lingappa Narayan Swamy.

Sandhu said national dignitaries also include Punjab and Haryana High Court’s first puisne Judge, Justice Rajiv Sharma, Justice Rajan Gupta, Justice Ajay Tewari, Justice Ritu Bahri, Justice Anil Kshetarpal and Justice Arun Monga.

International dignitaries include Rt. Lord Carnwath, Judge, Supreme Court of United Kingdom (UK), Justice Luc Lavrysen, Judge in the Belgian Constitutional Court, President of the EU Forum Judges for Environment, Justice Wangchuk, Chief Justice, Bhutan, and Justice Ananda Mohan Bhattarai, Judge, Supreme Court of Nepal. — TNS
