Chandigarh, August 22

A 24-year-old youth riding an SUV was arrested while carrying 15.400 kg of ganja and 270 gram of heroin here today. A country-made pistol and four live cartridges were also recovered from the suspect, who drives a school cab.

A team of the Sector 31 police station nabbed Ramanand, alias Guddu, a resident of Sector 65, Mohali, at a naka in Sector 31.

The police stopped a white Toyota Crysta being driven by him. They got suspicious and tried to question him. However, he made an unsuccessful attempt to escape from the spot. The police said during checking, a country-made pistol and four live cartridges were found from him. On checking the vehicle, a bag containing 15.4 kg of ganja and 270 gm of heroin was recovered.

The suspect was arrested and a case under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act was registered against him at the Sector 31 police station. The weapon recovered from him was purchased for Rs 30,000 from Saharanpur in UP. The police said the suspect was a father of two. “He drives a school cab and owns two cabs and a Toyota Crysta,” said a police official. —TNS

Modus operandi 

During interrogation, the suspect revealed that he was involved in drug trade for the past one year. He used to purchase drugs in bulk from Dera Bassi and prepare plastic pouches containing small quantity of ganja and heroin. He used to sell the drugs to customers in Jagatpura and near Amb Sahib Colony in Mohali. Students and drug addicts belonging to affluent families were among his customers.
