85 firms raided over minimum wages rule violations: Rai

New Delhi, December 14

The Labour Department, Delhi government, has so far raided 85 government and private offices/establishments as a part of its 10-day drive to check violations by employers in the implementation of minimum wages in the capital.

Sharing details of the raids, Labour Minister Gopal Rai today said the department has come across 79 cases of irregularities and raided 85 government and private offices and establishments.

“We had received complaints about employers not adhering to the Minimum Wages Act, 2017, and we noticed violations of the law in 79 cases,” said Rai.

The department had received complaints involving non-payment of minimum wages, confiscation of bank passbooks, refusing sharing information about provident fund and forcing workers to return part of wages already paid.

In the matter, the department has also filed three complaints with the police against contractors/firms supplying outsourced staff at government establishments.

An advisory to all government and private establishments has been issued directing them not to remove any complainant till their cases were disposed of by labour courts.

The Delhi government has fixed minimum wages of workers based on their skills applicable since November this year. According to it, unskilled workers are supposed to get Rs 14,000 per month, semi-skilled workers will get Rs 15,400 per month and Rs 16,962 has been fixed for skilled workers. — TNS
