CM inaugurates girl child week

Giving a call to protect the vanishing girls of the national Capital owing to female foeticide, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today urged the residents to stand up for the rights of the unborn girl child and provide information regarding those who commit such illegal acts.

“The Delhi Government is committed to ensure the strict implementation of the PCPNDT Act by ensuring regular inspections and decoy operations to catch the violators and also warn the unscrupulous doctors and clinics,” said Kejriwal inaugurating the Girl Child fortnight celebration programme to mark the National Girl Child Day (January 24).

The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994, restricts sex determination during the pregnancy of a woman.

To raise awareness about the law, NGO Alliance Defending Freedom India (ADF Indi) in association with PC&PNDT Cell of Directorate of Family Welfare of the city government today launched cirl child week campaign from January 18 to 24 here.

The sex ratio at birth in Delhi has increased from 886 females per 1,000 males in 2012 to 902 in 2016 (as per Civil Registration System Data), said the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who signed the pledge to honour and respect women.

The department has conducted successful decoy operations in coordination with the neighbouring states to curb the illegal practice of sex selection and sex selective abortion.

It is also sensitising the community regarding the importance of girl child/daughter in the society by conducting various community awareness programmes with school/college students, law students and judicial persons in coordination with various stakeholders to further improve the child sex ratio in the national Capital.
