Digital monitors in cabs to help passengers check route

App-based cab aggregators are required to install digital monitors on the backside of the driver’s head rests in all their future cabs in the national Capital as per the Delhi Government’s new City Taxi Scheme.

The step aimed at strengthening safety of passengers, especially women, will help passengers keep a track of the route taken by the driver.

A senior government official from the transport department said currently even though app-based cabs have the provision of mobile phones with GPS navigation system the device is inside the driver’s section on the vehicle’s dashboards and the passengers are unable to see it.

With the safety measure and monitor at the back of driver’s seats the passenger can keep a track of driver’s route, he added.

The cabs plying in the city will also have panic button as another safety measure for passengers. In September, the Delhi Government had made it mandatory for all drivers in the city to paste a minimum of four stickers on every cab cautioning passengers to ensure before starting a journey the child lock of the vehicle is deactivated.

The Delhi Government has plans of building a 24x7 control room to track the movement of all app-based vehicles plying in the city.
