New Delhi, May 21

Residents of slums in the city are going to participate in a marathon to be organised on May 26 to mark three years of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government in office.

Under the “Adopt A Slum” campaign of the Union Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry, newly-elected councillors of the Municipal Corporations of Delhi will adopt one slum and work for its development and empowerment of its dwellers.

Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Vijay Goel today visited slums in Timarpur and Model Town where he distributed forms for the upcoming marathon “Slum Yuva Daud” among youngsters.

Goel’s visit to Timarpur’s Sanjay Basti and Nandlal Jhuggi followed by Lalbagh slum in Model Town was part of his ministry's “Adopt A Slum” campaign.

Goel interacted with residents, saying that sports and youth are two key factors that help in nation building and strengthening our social fabric by uniting the masses.

“As the government at the Centre completes three years of good governance, it gives us a new energy to take the benefits of our pro-people policies to sections across India with a new zeal and spirit,” said Goel while praising the Prime Minister for the initiatives and seeking people’s support.

The Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) under the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry would adopt slums across 11 districts and will work for their overall development with young volunteers. The “Slum Yuva Daud” will be organised on May 26 at 6 am at Shankarlal Hall in Delhi University. Similar marathons will also be organized at Wazirpur, Model Town, Adarsh Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Burari and many more areas.
