Tall claims of the state police to check the rising crime against women has fallen flat in Rewari district after five cases of rape were reported during the last week.

A spurt in rape cases has not only put the local police in the dock, but also raised questions over the safety and security of women. In a latest case of crime against women, a 19-year-old nurse was allegedly gang-raped by a doctor and his three friends in the Gobind Puri locality here.

The police arrested Dr Sat Narayan alias Kochar today, after booking a case of rape and criminal intimidation against him on the victim’s complaint. As per the victim, the accused had given her a job at his hospital located on the Jhajjar road in Rewari after taking her academic documents. Though she left the job after 15 days, the doctor refused to return her documents.

“The victim called Sat Narayan on January 25 to get her documents back. The accused took her to his house at Gobind Puri in his car on pretext of returning the documents. At the doctor’s house three friends and the doctor raped the victim,” said investigative officer Sunita Devi.

She maintained the accused left the victim at Bawal town next day and threatened her of dire consequence if she filed a complaint. Later, the victim somehow reached Rewari and approached the police, to lodge her complaint. Earlier, four separate incidents of rape were reported between January 21-25, in two of the cases, minors were targeted by rapists.

Meanwhile, Savita Kumari, a social activist, expressed concern over the rising cases of rape in Rewari and demanded the police to take vital steps for ensuring the safety and security of women.
