Chandigarh, April 28

Five patients got a new lease of life today when the family of 27-year-old Sorav Diwedi, who was brain dead after a head injury in an accident and admitted to the PGI, donated his organs. A green corridor was created jointly by the PGI and the Chandigarh Police to transport Sorav's liver to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, this evening.

Sorav, who belongs to Nagal, was admitted to the PGI on April 25. Yesterday, doctors informed the family that he was not responding to the medication.

Dr Vipin Kaushal, DMS, PGI, said the family was convinced by doctors that it should donate the organs of the boy to needy patients to give them a new lease of life. He said at 6.50 pm, the green corridor was created from the PGI to the airport where the liver was handed over to a team of doctors from the ILBS for needy patients. He said three of his organs -- two kidneys, pancreas and corneas -- were used at the PGI for transplantation to needy patients.
