Mussoorie, April 1

Broken railings and construction debris strewn all over the Mall Road will greet tourists in Mussoorie as the tourist season picks up.

Residents of the town are irked at the condition of the Mall Road that has deteriorated due to lack of repair and maintenance and the peak tourist season is about to start in Mussoorie in a few days. The broken railings on the Mall Road pose risk to the lives of tourists and residents alike. The authorities concerned have also failed to clear the road of construction debris that is strewn at several places and is defacing the town that is known for its beauty and cleanliness.

The Mall Road that was dug up for a sewer project in the town and repaired by the Peyjal Nigam is also showing signs of subsidence due to faulty construction and could prove fatal for commuters and vehicle drivers here.

“The fate of the Camel’s Back Road, Spring Road and the Harnam Singh Road is also not worth describing as the sewer chambers at various places are higher than the roads and substandard material is being used in the construction of roads,” said former Municipal Council president OP Uniyal.

He said the Camel’s Back Road had become a dumping ground as most of the contractors dump debris on the road with impunity during the night, endangering the forest area here.

The authorities concerned have paid no heed to the directions of senior officials given from time to time to clear the debris as soon as works complete. District Magistrate, Dehradun, Ravinath Raman, at a meeting held earlier had given clear instructions to clear the debris and dump it at one place outside the town, but even his directions had gone unheeded.
