Car crash: A leisure trip cut short

Three girls, who died in a road accident last night after the Ford Figo car they were travelling in hit a tree and overturned at the road separating Sectors 44 and 45, were identified today as natives of Haryana. While two of them worked as graphic designers in Mohali, the third girl worked in Gurgaon and had come on a leisure trip to meet them. The victims were returning to Mohali after having dinner with their friends.

According to the police, two of the deceased have been identified as Pooja Sharma (28), a native of Kurukshetra, and Palak Arora (23), a native of Bhiwani. Both victims were working as graphic designers in a private company at Sector 67, Mohali. The duo was putting up in a rented accommodation in Sector 69, Mohali. 

The third victim, Tashmita (23), also a native of Bhiwani, was working in a company at Gurgaon and was pursuing the MCA.

Sources said Tashmita had arrived in the city on July 9 to meet her friends.

Three youths — Jaspreet, Harinder and Sandeep — were also injured in the accident. Jaspreet and Harinder were colleagues of  the victims while Sandeep was a neighbour.

Navdeep Brar, SP (City), said the victims were returning after having dinner when a motorcycle reportedly came from the wrong side. “The car was being driven by Jaspreet, who tried to save the motorcycle, but lost control over the speeding car, which first hit the road berm and then rammed into a tree,” the SP said. 

The three girls were sitting on the rear seat along with Harinder. 

All injured were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where the girls were declared brought dead. 

The sources said the youths had been shifted to a private hospital in Mohali. Sandeep’s condition is said to be serious.

The families of the deceased were informed after which they arrived in the city. The autopsy was conducted and the bodies were handed over to the victims’ kin. 

Case registered 

On a statement of Jaspreet, a case has been registered against the unknown motorcyclist at the Sector 34 police station.
