A 28-year-old constable today ended his life by taking poison. The police have booked his wife and in-laws on a charge of abetment of suicide on a complaint of the constable’s father.

The deceased has been identified as Varinder Singh, a resident of Kakrali village. He was deployed as a constable at the Zirakpur police station.

Investigating officer Kewal Singh said Varinder Singh got married to Gurpreet Kaur, a resident of Dhanauni village in 2013. The deceased’s father alleged that Gurpreet’s parents hid certain things such as her age and profession from them.

He alleged that they came to know after the marriage that Gurpreet was working in some private firm and not in the government sector. This led to differences between Varinder and Gurpreet following which Varinder’s in-laws started interfering in their affairs.

Depressed over this, Varinder took poison. He was rushed to the PGI, where he died later.

On a statement of the victim’s father, the police have booked Gurpreet and her parents under Section 306 of the IPC.
