In a major effort towards restructuring the examination schedule to increase teaching days and to save academic year of students, the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) is likely to club the biannual and private examinations of Class X and Class XII in both summer and winter zones.

Sources claimed that the state education board would soon convene a meeting to implement it from this academic session after the order in this regard was issued by the School Education Department.

They added that the annual examination of Class X in winter zone (Kashmir Division), held in the month of October or November, would be followed by biannual/private examination in the second fortnight of February of the next calendar year and the results would be declared within a period of 30 days.

Similarly, the annual examination of Class X in summer zone (Jammu Division), held in the month of February or March, will be followed by biannual/private examination in the second fortnight of June of the same calendar year and the results will be declared within a period of 30 days.

Similar pattern will be adopted for Class XII biannual/private examination. The School Education Department also directed that all board examinations would be conducted after 2 pm so that normal academic activity of the schools remains unaffected.

“The restructuring of the examination system was taken up because it has been observed that after the board examinations, classes do not commence for about 1-2 months till the results are declared, followed by vacations, thereby substantially reducing the actual duration of academic calendar,” an official said.

Further, it was also observed that the gap between annual and biannual examination of Class X can be reduced in a manner that would provide an opportunity to unsuccessful candidates to save their academic year, the official claimed.

“Before taking a decision, the School Education Department has received a large number of representations/inputs from stakeholders for reforms in the board examinations concerning the rescheduling of the annual and biannual/private examinations, number of teaching days in an academic year, provisional admission etc. These issues were discussed with the authorities concerned and experts as well.”

Meanwhile, Prof Zahoor Ahmad Chat, BOSE chairman, told The Tribune “Yes, we will restructure the examination schedule under which the biannual and private examinations of both zones will be clubbed together”. “The School Education Department has already told us to implement it immediately and we will convene a meeting in this regard shortly,” BOSE chairman said.
