Mohali, February 9

The Mohali Municipal Corporation has resolved to abolish property tax in the town.

A resolution in this regard was adopted by a majority vote during the last House meeting, chaired by Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh here on January 11.

The Mayor said the MC had now sent the resolution to the Punjab Government for approval. The resolution had been signed by 28 councillors.

Interestingly, Mohali MC Commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta has sent a dissent note in connection with the resolution and has recommended that it should be rejected.

The councillors in favour of abolishing property tax are of the view that the tax is a burden on residents as the value of property here is much higher than in other parts of the state. “Moreover, the residents have already paid development charges to GMADA,” said a councillor.

Property tax was introduced in Mohali in 2013-14. During the last financial year, the total collection of tax was Rs 10 crore. There are 38,637 residential units within the corporation limits, of which 10,622 have been exempted from paying property tax.
