Mrs. Gandhi Not to Go Campaigning

NEW DELHI: Mrs Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister, is not campaigning for the Congress in the coming Assembly elections in 10 States and three Union Territories.



NEW DELHI, May 27 (Samachar)

Mrs Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister, is not campaigning for the Congress in the coming Assembly elections in 10 States and three Union Territories.

Mr K.C. Pant, AICC General Secretary, denied at a press conference today that Mrs Gandhi was campaigning in her home State of UP as announced by Mr. Lokpati Tripathi.

Mr K. Brahmananda Reddy, Congress President, denied that the party manifesto for the Assembly elections was cleared by Mrs Gandhi. The text was not shown to her, he said.

A sub-committee constituted by the Congress Working Committee approved the manifesto a week ago but its release was held over till today. The original draft was given a “second look” in the meantime.

Mr Y.B. Chavan, leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Dr S.D. Sharma, Mr P.V. Narasimha Rao, Mr V.B. Raju and Mr K.

C. Pant are members of the sub-committee which worked on the guidelines given to its by the Working Committee.

Asked If Mrs. Gandhi was going to issue an appeal to the electorate Mr. Pant said: “I do not know.”

Answering a question whether Mr Sanjay Gandhi would campaign for the Congress, Mr Pant said: “Mr. Gandhi is not a member of the Congress.”

Mr Brahmananda Reddy will address election meetings at Jaipur, Bhopal and Lucknow and later campaign in Tamil Nadu.

Mr Chavan is campaigning in Tamil Nadu, and will move on to Uttar Pradesh and other States later.
