Karnal, July 9

To block the mobile phone network in jail complexes, the Prisons Department has deposited Rs5 crore to Hartron’s account for purchasing hi-tech jammers, said Yashpal Singal, Director General (Prisons).

He was in the city to inaugurate four manufacturing units of incense sticks, candles, bags and socks in the district jail.

The DG said the process to purchase jammers had been started and all jails would be equipped with jammers soon.

He further said 185 prisoners in the state were parole jumper and the police would launch a drive to arrest them. “We are looking to seize surety bonds filed by acquaintances of parole jumpers.”

Singal, meanwhile, listened to grievances of jail inmates; most of them wanted to be shifted to jails near their homes. At this, the DG said the department had to avoid overcrowding in jails.

On the initiative of opening of manufacturing units by the Karnal jail authorities, the DG said they were making inmates skillful.

Sher Singh, jail superintendent, the unit related to incense sticks was on the PPP mode and the inmates would get money. “The inmates have been trained in making socks,” he added.
