Mohali, July 25

Safai sewaks of the Municipal Corporation went on a strike here today in support of their demands.

The protesters gathered at a park near Phase I, held a rally and raised slogans. Later, they marched to the office of the Deputy Commissioner carrying effigies of the Modi and Badal governments. The effigies were later burnt by the protesters.

Among the protesters were Sajjan Singh, chairman, Punjab Safai Mazdoor Federation, Pawan Godiyal, secretary, and Sobha Ram, president of the Municipal Corporation Safai Mazdoor Union.

The protesters said they had earlier suspended their strike on two occasions following an assurance by the Local Government Minister and the corporation commissioner that their demands would be fulfilled but that did not happen.

What they demand

Their demands included filling of 328 vacancies through regular recruitment in the civic body, giving posts of drivers to those who had been driving vehicles for a long time, stopping of the contract system in departments, regularisation of the services of workers, implementation of the Pay Commission recommendations and an insurance over of Rs 10 lakh for workers.
