Woman abandons girl, gets three years in jail

YAMUNANAGAR: Sunil Jindal, Chief Judicial Magistrate, yesterday awarded three-year imprisonment to a woman for abandoning her daughter in a public toilet immediately after her birth.

Yamunanagar, January 21

Sunil Jindal, Chief Judicial Magistrate, yesterday awarded three-year imprisonment to a woman for abandoning her daughter in a public toilet immediately after her birth.

The court declared the woman’s uncle, Ramsain (younger brother of her father), a proclaimed offender (PO) but acquitted her mother, Ramnati. Sources said the woman was unmarried and the child was born due to illicit relationship with her uncle, Ramsain.

According to the prosecution, Ramsain said he and his niece developed illicit relations. His niece became pregnant in May, 2011. She was administered a medicine for terminating the pregnancy but in vain. The woman informed her mother about the pregnancy. It was decided to throw away the child after birth. The woman gave birth to a girl child at her home in Yamunanagar on February 18, 2012, and her mother, Ramnati, abandoned the newborn in a public toilet. The abandoned child was shifted to Shishu Greh, Panchkula. —TNS
